Camino de Santiago Portugues Day 11

Bill made it to 70 today! He said we were either going to have a celebration of life or a parrrtay! He is the first male in his family in generations to live this long. Something that can’t be topped since he is the last male Shaw.

Bill, feeling more alive than ever stepped out in front of all us. We struggled to keep up!

It was supposed to rain today but the skies parted and stayed clear as we walked through acres upon acres of vineyards and rose bushes galore! 27,279 steps and 11.55 miles later we rolled into Ponte de Lima – the oldest in Portugal.

Bill got to choose where we sleep tonight and it’s the Municipal Albergue. He wanted Chappy to have a real taste of Camino living. Chappy couldn’t be happier – he gets to sleep with 9 women at the same time.Tomorrow 1 inch of rain is predicted – 100% – all day! On a good day the path is muddy and the steepest climb of the whole Camino….  Here’s hoping for the best.

About Paige Shaw

Hi! I'm Paige - a freelance travel photographer. Let's go on a photo journey across the globe. The aim of my work it to show you the many layers and exquisite textures of a locality; its character, culture, people and beauty. Bitten by the wanderlust bug years ago my husband Bill and I set out to see the world. 2013 gave birth to a travel blog (www.billandpaige.com) chronicling our journeys so that curious family and friends could follow in real time. From that beginning so too a photographer was born. Honing my skills over the years I am now excited to narrate our discoveries with imagery! As you glimpse my art - join as we explore together. Be sure to throw your fashion ego out the door cuz there's no room in the carry-on luggage. Sunrise shots start at 5am. Hiking to the top for a different perspective will definitely get your blood pumping and you might even need to role up your pant legs to capture those closeups on the water…. Most of all - get ready to SMILE - it's the universal language. I’m also a wife, mother, yogi, pilgrim, burner, golfer, skier, scuba diver and expert wanderluster. “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” ― Pablo Picasso

I plan on doing the Camino next year. I notice your sleeping quarters in one picture. I’m assuming that is outside of the normal. I have very low expectations (I know it is best to have no expectations) and prepare myself for the worst. Any advice is welcome. I will be doing the route from Portugal.

You can find private rooms with sheets and towels if you want or you can stay in the dorm type rooms for less. If you think you’ll be in dorms pack a silk sleeping sack with the pillow flap. I also made a small pillow case by cutting a regular one in half and then narrowing it. I added Velcro to the top inside. At night I put my down shirt coat in it and Velcro it shut and that’s my pillow. Where are you starting – what city?
